It is simply down to regulations and cost, we are tied (quite rightly) with strict regulations, however illegally exporting WEEE to non-Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries (such as those in Africa or Asia), where worker safety and environmental protections are less regulated and can often be lax.

This is of course very attractive to criminals.

There is a cost to dispose of old electrical and electronic devices and it is very tempting to take the cheapest option.
