Small companies do not take data security seriously

This is taken from an article by James Hurley of the Daily Telegraph

“More than two thirds of respondents (68pc) reported that they either never train staff on information security procedures or only do so on an “ad hoc basis”.

Data security is rarely discussed at board level in small businesses, despite the risk of fines and the loss of customer information.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) can fine companies and individuals up to £500,000 for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act, following the enhancement of its powers in April 2010.

Just 4pc of companies said they had changed their behaviour in response to the changes, while 58pc of respondents said they were not aware of the enhanced powers.

More than one in five of the companies surveyed (22pc) said they lacked awareness of their legal responsibility to keep confidential information relating to staff and customers secure.
