What is Pretexting?

This scam works exactly the same as phishing, but it’s done over the phone. Here people will pose as legitimate businesses to trick you into giving out information and they are very good and VERY PERSUASIVE, take the Talk Talk scam as an example.

The caller pretends to be from your bank, credit card company or even a government department and tells you there’s some issue that can only be resolved if you provide account information, your national insurance number, logins and username etc.

We at Secure Data Recycling advise that when you get a call like this your first thought should be..IT’S A SCAM.

If anybody calls you out of the blue and starts asking for this kind of info. Hang up on them and call wherever they were supposedly calling you from, both to establish that there is no problem with your account and to tip them off to the scam so they can warn other customers.

Criminals get information about you from a number of sources, old paper documents, old computers and hard drives and hacking into business systems.

Talk to Secure Data Recycling about protecting your PC and Network and making sure that all your old paper data is shredded and old hard drives are wiped or destroyed.
