Government money set aside for Electrical Recycling

Back in 2015 the department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has announced that £775,000 has been set-aside by electrical retailers, manufacturers and suppliers for local council electrical recycling schemes.

The funds are being supplied to support the Distributor Take-back Scheme, whereby a fee is paid to cover the waste electronic and electronic equipment (WEEE) obligations.

Failure to comply with the WEEE regulations could result in fines of up to £5000 at Magistrates Court or an unlimited fine at a crown court.

The Business Minister has stated ‘£1 billion’ of unused electrical equipment is kept in homes and believes the new funding will reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Local councils can apply for up to £40,000 of the fund and applications are open until the 30th October.
