Toxic Substances in Computers

Computers and computer components contain a variety of toxic substances like dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), cadmium, chromium, radioactive isotopes and mercury.

For example an old style computer monitor may contain more than 6% lead by weight, much of which is in the lead glass of the cathode ray tube (CRT). Circuit boards contain considerable quantities of lead-tin solders that are more likely to leach into landfill or create air pollution if incinerated.

We all tend to focus on the resale value of old PC’s but it is worth remembering that’s PC’s and old computers must be recycled properly to avoid toxic substances ending up in landfill.
